Enterprise architecture for LKW Walter
Application landscape and target architecture for one of Europe’s largest transport and logistics companies.
Context
LKW Walter organises full-load transports across Europe. Its business runs on a grown application landscape: systems for orders, transport planning, fleet and finance, and interfaces to customers, partners and authorities.
Task & role
As enterprise architect I worked on the application landscape and its target picture: which systems carry which capabilities, where they overlap and in which order the landscape should change.
Architecture
The landscape is described along business capabilities – from order to transport to invoice – with the applications and interfaces that support each of them. The target picture and the steps towards it are modelled in ArchiMate.
Decisions & trade-offs
- Capabilities before systems. Starting from what the business does keeps the discussion about the landscape independent of individual products.
- Steps, not a big bang. The target picture is reached through changes that each stand on their own.
Outcome
A shared picture of the landscape and a target architecture to steer changes against.
